How Long Are Dogs Pregnant?
Dog pregnancy (gestation) lasts an average of 63 days from the mating date, though the normal range is 58–68 days. Smaller breeds tend to deliver a little earlier; giant breeds a little later.
The pregnancy is divided into three trimesters of roughly 21 days each. Each trimester brings visible changes — from early behavioral shifts to a noticeably rounded belly by week 5, and active nesting behavior in the final weeks.
Signs Your Dog May Be Pregnant
- Decreased appetite or mild nausea in weeks 1–3
- Nipple enlargement and darkening (week 3–4)
- Increased affection or clinginess
- Visible belly rounding by week 5
- Nesting behavior and restlessness in the final week
What to Prepare
Around week 7, set up a whelping box — a quiet, warm, easy-to-clean space where your dog can give birth. Introduce her to it early so she feels comfortable.
Schedule vet checkups at week 4 (ultrasound to confirm pregnancy) and week 7–8 (X-ray to count puppies). Have your vet's emergency number ready for the final week.
