About the Research
Between 2020 and 2024, researchers at UC Davis (led by Benjamin and Lynette Hart) published a series of studies examining veterinary hospital records to look for associations between the age a dog was neutered and their later risk of certain joint disorders (hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tear, elbow dysplasia) and cancers (lymphoma, mast cell tumor, hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma). The original 2020 study covered 35 breeds; a 2024 update added data for several more large breeds, and a separate study looked specifically at mixed-breed dogs across five weight categories.
The headline finding across all of this work: there is no single "right age" that applies to every dog. Vulnerability varied enormously by breed, size, and sex — some breeds showed no increased risk at any neutering age, while others showed a clear pattern tied to body size or a specific sex.

Notice that cancer risk didn't track with weight in this particular study — it was joint disorders specifically that scaled with size. Individual purebred studies (below) sometimes found breed-specific cancer patterns that this general weight-based view wouldn't catch.

Neither view is simply "wrong." The traditional guidance exists for real, well-established reasons — particularly in shelters and rescues, where a dog going home unaltered carries a genuine risk of never being brought back for the surgery. The research-based view is about optimizing an individual pet's long-term health outcome when a return visit is a safe assumption. Does neutering early cause joint problems in all dogs?
No. UC Davis research on 35+ breeds found that vulnerability to joint disorders from early neutering was generally related to body size — most small breeds showed no increased risk at any neutering age, while many (not all) larger breeds showed increased risk when neutered before 12 months, and especially before 6 months.
Which breeds showed no increased risk at any neutering age?
Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds stood out as exceptions among giant breeds, showing no increased joint disorder risk regardless of neutering age. Most small breeds also showed little to no increased joint disorder risk at any age, though a few (like the Boston Terrier and Shih Tzu) still showed an increased cancer risk in one sex despite the low joint-disorder risk.
Are there breeds where the research suggests waiting a long time, or reconsidering neutering age carefully?
Female Golden Retrievers are the most notable example — research found an increased cancer risk compared to intact females at any neutering age studied, not just early ones. Several giant breeds added in 2024 (Mastiff males, Newfoundland females) also showed elevated risks that the researchers suggest may warrant waiting well beyond the traditional 6-month mark. Does this research mean shelters and vets are wrong to neuter dogs early for population control?
No — this research is about optimizing timing for individual long-term health outcomes, and doesn't address or dispute the separate, well-established rationale for early spay/neuter in shelter and population-control contexts, where preventing unplanned litters is the priority and a dog's return for a later surgery can't be guaranteed. The two goals can be in tension for a specific pet, and that tension is exactly why an individual conversation with a vet matters.
What did the original mixed-breed dog study find?
A separate UC Davis study on mixed-breed dogs across five weight categories found no significantly increased cancer risk in any weight category. However, in dogs weighing 20 kg (44 lbs) or more, neutering before 12 months was associated with a significantly higher risk of one or more joint disorders — commonly up to 3 times the rate seen in intact dogs.
