How Cat Aging Works

A cat's first year equals roughly 15 human years. Their second year adds about 9 more. After that, each cat year is approximately 4 human years. This calculator follows the guidelines developed by the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP).

Cat Life Stages at a Glance

Understanding your cat's life stage helps you provide the right care at the right time. Kittens (0–1 year) need high-calorie growth nutrition and a full vaccine series. Junior cats (1–2 years) are still filling out physically. Young adults (3–6 years) are in peak condition — this is when feeding habits and annual checkups matter most for long-term health.

Mature cats (7–10 years) benefit from annual bloodwork to catch kidney disease and hyperthyroidism early — both are common in middle-aged cats and highly manageable when detected soon. Senior cats (11–14 years) should see the vet twice a year. Super seniors (15+) need close monitoring, but many live comfortably into their late teens with proper care.

Why Age-Appropriate Care Matters

Feeding a senior cat kitten food (or vice versa) can cause real problems over time. Calorie density, protein levels, and nutrient ratios are formulated for specific life stages. Knowing your cat's equivalent human age helps you have more productive conversations with your vet about what's normal — and what to watch for — at each stage.
