How Long Are Cats Pregnant?

Cat pregnancy (gestation) lasts an average of 63–65 days from the mating date. The normal range is 58–72 days — cats have a wider natural variation than dogs. Most cats deliver between day 63 and day 67. If your cat hasn't delivered by day 70, contact your veterinarian.

The pregnancy is divided into roughly three stages. The first three weeks involve embryo development with few visible signs. Weeks four through six bring noticeable physical changes. The final weeks are focused on growth, nesting, and preparation for birth.

Signs Your Cat May Be Pregnant

  • Nipple enlargement and pinking ("pinking up") around weeks 2–3
  • Mild nausea or reduced appetite in early weeks
  • Increased affection and vocalization
  • Visible belly rounding by week 4–5
  • Weight gain of 2–4 lbs over the pregnancy
  • Active nesting behavior in the final week

What to Prepare

Around week 6, set up a kittening box — a quiet, warm, private space lined with clean towels or newspaper. Introduce your cat to it early so she explores it on her own terms before labor begins.

Schedule a vet visit around week 4 for ultrasound confirmation and kitten count. An X-ray after day 42 gives a more accurate litter size count and helps you know when all kittens have been delivered.

Switch to a high-quality kitten food or an "all life stages" formula from week 4 onward. This supports the rapid growth of kittens in the final weeks and sustains your cat through nursing.
